Sloatsburg is a village located in the town of Ramapo in Rockland County, New York and is about 35 miles away from New York City.
Sloatsburg is one of the most isolated and remote communities of Rockland County, as it’s located in the westernmost part of the county. On the southeast side, Sloatsburg borders Hillburn. On the west side Sloatsburg borders Tuxedo Park, an upscale village of Orange County.
Sloatsburg features premier real estate with exclusively residential single family homes of different styles, all in a beautiful landscape and within the New York Metropolitan Area.
Sloatsburg is situated right in the territories of Harriman State Park, whose mountains and dense trees provide a scenic and isolated environment. Sloatsburg is home to vast areas of bodies of water, ranging from narrow streams and ponds to lakes. The largest lakes in Sloatsburg are Pine Grove Lake, Cranberry Lake and Potake Pond. There are multiple neighborhoods of residential homes located along these beautiful lakes in a picturesque environment. Additionally, the Ramapo River flows through most of the village. Sloatsburg is a suburban community consisting of mostly residential homes in heavy tree-lined streets.
The main road passing through Sloatsburg is New York State Route 17, which branches off into New Jersey State Route 17 and New York State Route 59 in Suffern and Hillburn.
The section of Route 17 passing through Sloatsburg is known as Orange Turnpike. Sloatsburg has convenient access to Interstate Interstate-87/Intestate-287 via exit 15A. These roads combine to give Sloatsburg access to local businesses and other destinations in Rockland County and to more remote locations such as New Jersey, Upstate New York, New York City, and Westchester County. Additionally, Sloatsburg has great access to the Harriman State Park via the Seven Lakes Drive, a scenic 18 mile road that runs through most of the park.
Sloatsburg has a train station located along Metro North Port Jervis Line, which runs to downtown Manhattan’s New York Penn Station via a transfer at Secaucus (NJ.) The Port Jervis Line becomes known as New Jersey Main Line at the Suffern train station, the border of NY/NJ. Sloatsburg has bus service from Transport of Rockland (TOR), which runs all over Rockland County.
Sloatsburg is served by the excellent Ramapo Central School District and is home to Sloatsburg Elementary School. The Sloatsburg public library gives more educational resources to the community.
There are many fantastic recreational opportunities in and surrounding Sloatsburg. Dater Mountain Nature Park includes mountain tops and valleys, crossed by several small streams with numerous lowlands providing interesting plant and aquatic life for passive hiking, walking and nature observation. The park is landlocked, with no road direct access but there are nearby parking spaces. Eleanor Burlingham Memorial Park includes Fishing, canoeing, birding watching and hiking. The park covers an area of 45 acres with Parking available along roadway at end of Waldron Terrace. Sloatsburg is also home to its own village park which includes ball fields, tennis courts, basketball court, playground area, roller hockey rink, trails for walking and biking, open grass area with plenty of parking space. Sloatsburg has its own municipal community swimming pool, that also includes a children’s playground.
The nearby Harriman State Park offers a large variety of recreational activities such as fishing, wildlife sightseeing, boating, camping, hiking, picnicking, swimming, grilling, and much more. Lake Welch, Lake Sebago, and Lake Tiorati have man made beaches that give a unique experience of swimming and sunbathing in a scenic forest environment. The three man-made beaches have plenty of parking spaces, open areas, benches, showers and changing rooms. Harriman State Park is simply an outdoor lovers’ paradise, and Sloatsburg residents are lucky to be only minutes away. The newly built Joseph St. Lawrence Community Center is located in nearby Hillburn and features an 1,800 seating capacity multi-purpose field, with indoor fitness center and basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, making up the town of Ramapo’s largest community recreational center.
Sloatsburg has been an incorporated village since 1929 and has provided excellent municipal services to its residents. Sloatsburg is governed by a mayor and has its own departments of assessor, clerk, law, justice court, fire, building, highway, engineering, recreation. The zip code of Sloatsburg is 10974, and the village also has a US post office.
Sloatsburg is home to numerous historical buildings and areas including some that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Old Sloatsburg Cemetery, Sloat House, Sloat's Dam and Mill Pond, Jacob Sloat House. The Sloatsburg Historical Society preserves the rich history of the village.
